Lesson 28: Directional Particles

This lesson introduces directional particles, a set of words that attach to verbs to show which way an action moves. These particles appear constantly in Tongan and carry meaning that English handles through separate phrases like "come here" or "go away."

A directional particle is a word that comes after a verb and tells you which direction the action moves. English uses prepositions or separate verbs to express direction: "come here," "go up," "send it over." Tongan adds a single word after the verb.
