Lesson 25: Plural Markers

Until now, every noun in the book has appeared as singular. This lesson teaches how to talk about more than one person, animal, or thing.

In English, you add "-s" to make a noun plural: "house" becomes "houses." Tongan nouns do not change their form. Instead, Tongan places a word before the noun to signal "more than one." These words are plural markers. Tongan has four plural markers, each used with a different type of noun, plus a dual marker for exactly two.
